On October 21st, an unseasonably sunny and warm day, 15 riders and their horses took part in the postponed Weald Trophy final. Maggie Pattison and Shelley Bates had stepped up to the plate an offered to organise a route for the finalists to ride around for which the committee were very grateful. The final took place near Albury sports ground in Surrey.
The 24 km route was somewhat shorter than the original intended 32km ride at Devils Dyke, which had to be postponed because of the weather forecast for the ride day, and there were no gates on the route. All the riders had their horses vetted by Katie Bedwin and James Dickinson and then they set off on course. The route was well marked and rode well. The finalists rode their horses through Blackheath Forest crossing the A25 at Chilworth before heading up to Newlands Corner and westwards along the North Downs Way. Then the riders rode a loop out to Check Point 3 at Effingham Forest before returning eastwards and heading down Juniper Hill to the road crossing at Check Point 4. The final stretch of the route went around the outskirts of Shere and across the Tilling Bourne and through Albury Park and back to the venue.
All of the riders completed within the 10-11kph speed parameters so the placings came down to the finishing heart rates.
A huge thank you to Maggie, Shelley and all of the helpers without whom the final would not have taken place. Also we would like to thank Alex from Omega Equine who sponsored the class and gave all the finalists some goodies to try at home. Lastly we would like to thank On the Hoof Distance Training for sponsoring the best condition award
