Nicola Thorne

I have been involved in endurance riding now for a number of years and have had the opportunity to ride all over the world, however still predominantly ride in the UK and in my home county of Norfolk.  My first endurance horse was my much loved gelding ZA Marengo, known affectionately as Mango the Magnificent. He took me through the learning process at the shorter distances with many years of fun riding around the UK.

I had always wanted to ride the longer distances, with FEI aspirations, and having become addicted to endurance riding I went on to ride all over the USA, South Africa, Argentina, Europe, Dubai, Ireland and have continued to compete in the UK.  I was delighted to hold the FEI Number One rider spot two years in a row, and to also to gain my Elite status. This year I completed the Sheikh Mohammed Cup in Dubai on my reserve horse LM Bolena which was a huge training challenge for me. My biggest career highlight to date is, without a doubt, the privilege of riding for Team GBR at the European Championships last year on LR Bold Greyson, the horse I am taking back to the World Championships this year.  I feel incredibly honoured to have this opportunity to ride for my country.

Carri-Ann Dark

I started riding from a very early age as part of the South West Group and enjoyed helping and being part of the South West team. I also wrote a series of articles in the South West newsletter. Originally I grew up competing at smaller events with my mum and then crewing her at bigger events.  Very quickly I started to compete in different classes to my mum and began riding solo. I began endurance on Golden Charlie whom I achieved my first bronze buckle qualifier on, when achieving this I became the youngest rider at eight years old to complete 30 miles in the country. Over the years I continued to progress through endurance and became the Junior Champion on Dream Catcher I. Although I primarily see myself as an endurance rider I have also been very open towards other disciplines and had even achieved my WES western riding 75 hours buckle along with other successful achievements both in cross country and within the South West group.

I have really enjoyed bringing several horses from Novice to Advanced and then onto FEI level over the years. I like bringing on youngsters and getting them up to the top level, as the bond you get and the journey each one takes is different. Even if it is a challenge, it means that much more by the time you achieve your goals together. Even if I am not riding at an endurance event you may find me helping, crewing, spectating or taking photography/videography. Finding time over the years to give back to the sport, from being a vet writer, giving presentations and talks, writing articles, helping organise a fundraising ride or crewing at the World Endurance Championships for Team GBR.

I have completed over 19,000 successful endurance competition miles over the years

International Young Rider Team 2016

 Bella Fricker

I have been riding since before I can remember, led around the garden aboard my grandmother’s Anglo-Arab, who also competed in endurance to a high level. I started endurance riding when I was 13 and competed in my first FEI class when I was 15 on my part-bred Connemara pony. I took a few years out of FEI competition and then recommenced this in 2014 when I began riding for Yawl Hill Stud. Since then I’ve gone on to complete three FEI** 120km rides, two of those have been abroad. My career highlights have to include my first race abroad in France with Eskar to take second place on what has to be one of the toughest courses I’ve ridden to date. The second career highlight was gaining my final qualification for the Championships at Fontainebleau in April of this year also with Eskar. It was huge success, I was able to experience a big race setting gaining invaluable experience ahead of the Europeans. I’ve been very lucky to have competed and crewed in several countries now and to be able to compete at a championships will be my greatest achievement to date.

Caitlin Theodorou

Caitlin TheodorouI am a Geography student at the University of Manchester, where I am currently the Captain of the University’s Equestrian team.  I first sat on a pony at the age of two and have been riding ever since! I was a keen pony clubber from the age of four, eventually competing in pony club mounted games, show jumping and eventing teams. My family first got into endurance as my mum wanted to be able to ride and compete at the same time as her children, so it became a truly family sport. I first started competing in endurance at the age of eight on my 10.2 hh Welsh Section A pony, Paddy. I was dropped in the deep end as our first competitive ride was at Red Dragon, which he flew around. After Paddy came my Appaloosa Poppet, who was very successful in graded rides, followed by our Arab Socks (Sea Emerald) and this is where my endurance racing took off. After winning my first 80km race at Ludlow at the age of 14, my goal was to compete at FEI level with the ultimate goal of being selected for the team. I started competing at FEI level with Socks in 2011, we had a few successes being second in our first 1* at Haywood Oaks and winning our first 2* at Cirencester, however after another successful 120km at Haywood Oaks in 2012 Socks injured herself and despite treatment, surgery and rest, she did not come back to her previous form (however, she is now enjoying national rides with my mum). During this period I rode for other people in various classes. Meanwhile my sister Amy was bringing her ¾ Welsh Section D pony, Marco up through the ranks and had competed up to 2* level. She kindly offered Marco to me if I could qualify him in time for the European Young Rider Endurance Championships at Rio Frio, which we did at Euston Park this year, where Marco not only won the class but also got best condition – which has been a definite career highlight for me!

My parents Ruth and Craig Chadwick are my crew and we work as a team with our own roles in the vet gate. I am also sponsored by Harry Hall. I have many career highlights such as traveling with my family to Ermelo, Holland and also being placed 82nd in the FEI Young Rider World Endurance rankings.
